Note: I have had various difficulties with the galleries recently. This page will probably change a lot until I have solved the problems (both technical and workflow) to my satisfaction. (20091019)
Workbenches (April 2009)
This is a gallery of photos I took of the two benches I built for my shop during March and April 2009. With a basement shop, I can’t build anything large (like a workbench) without it becoming a permanent fixture. Knowing that, I intentionally built my bench using construction-grade douglas fir, hoping that using lesser-quality materials would make leaving the bench behind when we someday move.
The smaller bench was made for Beanie’s birthday. He likes to spend time with me in the workshop, and we have a lot of fun together, but I often have to send him upstairs when I am using any of the big machines. It is just to hard to keep track of him with my back turned, and he doesn’t have anything to keep him in one spot.
The Sourdough Bread Experiment
I have loved sourdough bread since I was a little boy. I remember going on trips with my dad, as his “helper.” My pay was always in food. We would eat something special, like pizza, that we didn’t normally get at home. I remember a particular sandwich shop that we at in, and Dad telling me stories about great sourdough that he had eaten. I love sourdough, but it is so expensive in the store, and the stuff you get is stale half the time anyway. I have tried many times to make my own starter, and bake my own bread, but have been disappointed at the results. This time I approached the whole thing scientifically, and had great results. This bread made the best sandwich.
